We are planning to plant a tree in the grounds to commemorate the
Jubilee. Everyone seems to have had the same idea so it is difficult to source
the kind of tree we would like. It
needs to be suitable for the conditions at Gawthorpe and an appropriate type
of tree. The National Trust are
helping us in our quest. |
Workshops
All the workshops are held in the Stockbridge Room of the Estate Building at Gawthorpe Hall.

The National Trust Cafe is not open in 2022, so please bring a packed lunch.
Tea and coffee will be available all day in the workroom.

A tour of Lancashire Archives
Preston
Friday 24th June 10.30 am -
Earlier this year
Friends of Gawthorpe contributed £500 towards the conservation of the
Shuttleworth Accounts (1581-1621) which are kept at Lancashire Archives
Preston. The Archives and Gawthorpe Hall (LCC Museum Service) had
successfully applied for grant funding to conserve the archives and the
contribution from the Friends was additional to that. This is an
opportunity to have a tour behind the scenes of the archives and to see the
conservation of the Shuttleworth accounts as the conservator works on
them. Places are limited, first
come – first served, ring Gawthorpe Hall (01282 771004) to book a free
place (if this is over subscribed we will see if the archives can offer another
date).
There is limited paid parking available at Lancashire Archives in Preston (Lancashire Archives (Record) Office, Bow Ln, Preston PR1 2RE), and it is close to Preston railway station.

Gawthorpe
Textiles Collection has received funding to help the local community to get
creative for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
We
have received a grant of £3,500 from the Arts Council England Let’s Create
Jubilee Fund to help our local community to put creativity at the heart of the
celebrations for Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022.
Made
possible thanks to National Lottery players and administered by UK Community
Foundations on behalf of the Arts Council, the Let’s Create Jubilee Fund will
support a programme of artist led workshops linked to the Green Canopy Ethical
Textiles Exhibition on show at Gawthorpe Hall until 10th July.
Local
artist, Rabia Sharif will run a series of free workshops for adults in May and
June at Gawthorpe Hall. Rabia’s beautiful, embroidered jacket pictured here is
a key piece in the Green Canopy Ethical Textiles exhibition.

Contemporary
embroidery artist, Jess Grady, will run a series of workshops for families in
the Jubilee half term week in venues around Burnley. Jess utilises
unconventional and recycled materials in her textiles which are a bold and
tactile exploration of colour and pattern. Dates will be available on
Eventbrite shortly.
Re: Fashion Repair Shop at Finsley Gate Wharf
You
can also bring along any clothes that need mending and we’ll see what we can
do. Leave them with us to repair and renew and come back and collect them next
time we are open. You can also donate clothing that you no longer want that we
can upcycle, repair, and resell. Come and see us at Finsley Gate Wharf in

Re: Fashion Repair Shop is being run by Gawthorpe Textiles Collection in
association with the Canal & River Trust and is part of the Ethical
Textiles project funded by the National Lottery Reaching Communities Fund.
Lancashire’s Textile Treasures –
Heritage workshops at Queen Street Mill, Burnley.
Textiles
are an important part of every culture with the power to unlock memories and
bring people together.
Gawthorpe
Textiles Collection is looking to work with local residents to explore the
stories that textiles can unlock in a free programme of six textile heritage
workshops starting on 18th May.
During the workshops participants will develop
skills in basic digital photography and image creation, writing, research, and
storytelling towards curating an online exhibition.
Workshops
will be held at Queen Street Mill Textile Museum in Burnley.
The
Lancashire’s Textile Treasures project is a collaboration between Gawthorpe
Textiles Collection, University of Central Lancashire and Super Slow Way.
The project received DCMS and National Lottery
funding, distributed by the Heritage Fund as part of their Digital Skills for
Heritage initiative.

Gawthorpe
Textiles Collection is going to be undergoing some major changes. In 2021 we
updated our vision for the future of the Textiles Collection and our goal is to
create a centre of excellence in textile learning. We are currently developing
partnerships with educational institutions and other stakeholders towards
achieving this. However, we also need to do some groundwork to make the
Collection more accessible and easier for people to use.
Due
to a shortage of space and worsening environmental conditions in the Collection
stores in the Hall basement, we are no longer able to continue to keep the
Collections stored there in the long term. As such we are currently looking for
a new premises to relocate the stores to. This move creates a fantastic
opportunity for us to undertake work with the collection to improve how it is
stored, to photograph each item and improve cataloguing. The current stores are
full and relocating will mean that we can also begin adding to the collection
again, as well as have more space to make the collection accessible to
researchers, academics and the general public.
In
addition we also intend to redisplay the Collection galleries in the Hall. This
will include purchasing new display cases to improve the way that the textiles
can be shown, to tell new stories and to introduce recordings that we have of
Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth speaking about her collection, bringing both Rachel and
the Collection to life for visitors.
All of this activity is going to cost in the region of £300,000 and in the coming weeks we will be launching a major fundraising campaign. A group of lacemakers will be demonstrating – bobbin
lace, needle lace, tatting and crochet.
There will be spare lace pillows and other implements for visitors to

how to make a braid.
National Trust
In 1913 King George and Queen Mary visited Gawthorpe Hall.
Queen Mary planted a Copper Beech tree and King George placed the
sundial on top of its pedestal (Both the tree and sundial are no longer there)

The spade is on National Trust collections website Spade 421951 | National Trust Collections it has been used a couple of
times since, one is listed on the NT site and it was last used in 1990s to
plant the mulberry that it still there. Although the spade is in good condition it is
unlikely to be used again for any future plant.
The inscription on the handle – Her
Majesty Queen Mary used this spade in planting the Copper Beech at
Gawthorpe. 9 July 1913.
Summer Walk - Wednesday 17th August,
11am to 12 noon. National Trust ranger
Kayleigh Chadwick, will show us the latest developments in the garden completed
by the National Trust volunteers. They
are a skilful group who have worked hard in the garden.
The Walled Garden - The National Trust team of Volunteers have been growing produce in the walled garden and intend to have an honesty box on display as and when produce is available. So, keep an eye out for a barrow of Gawthorpe Hall home grown produce or a posy of flowers collected from the garden. If you take some home, please leave a donation which will go towards conservation efforts at Gawthorpe Hall.
