Victorian Christmas We will have hand made crafts
for sale made by our members. There will be a raffle for a
quilt made by members Frances and Kathleen Thank you so much for spends
many hours making the quilt to be raffled. The raffle will be held over
the two weekends. The draw will be
held on the close of day on 11th December. |

We welcome handmade items to
sell on the stall at the Victorian Christmas and also small items in the
Friends area of the sales area of the Hall.
Vintage and antique textiles are also welcome if they are small, clean
and in good condition.
50th Anniversary
In 2023 The Friends of Gawthorpe
will be celebrating our Gold - 50th Anniversary. We hope to make it a special year.

Conservation of the Shuttleworth
Accounts (1581 – 1621) which are kept at
Lancashire Archives

An account book that has
been conserved and one just been taken out of the bath by the conservator ready
to dry.
a beautiful illustrated book.
I am sure we all had an
interesting morning at the Archives and learned all sorts of interesting
information.
It has so much information about Lancashire and quite a lot is available on line.

Exspiravit 23 July – 6 November

An
exhibition by five female artists which brings together a wealth of experience
and captures the essence of Gawthorpe Hall.
Exspiravit depicts the historical narrative view of this beautiful
Elizabethan Hall, looking at who lived in the house and what it was like
hundreds of years ago. The artists have
also been inspired by the wonderful collections on display.

Sculptural Birds and Flowers with Priscilla Edwards Saturday 1 October 12 noon - 4pm, £35 Padiham Town Hall
This workshop by award winning
artist and author Priscilla Edwards explores the extraordinary possibilities of
working with embroidery techniques mixed with a variety of contemporary
processes. You will learn how to create small-scale bird and flower sculptures
using lightweight wire. Priscilla will share with you her unique combination of
creative techniques to embellish your bird or flower using layers of fabric and
wax before adding touches of paper, paint, buttons, beads and hand stitch.
This workshop would suit anyone who enjoys working
with mixed media techniques, fabric, wire and paper. Beginner’s welcome.
Crazy Patchwork Needlecase with Christine Stanford
Saturday 8 October 12 noon – 4pm, £25
Padiham Town Hall
In this workshop you will learn how to make a crazy
patchwork needle case. Using cut out shapes of cotton fabrics which are placed
together randomly and stitched using a selection of beautiful hand stitches.
You will be taken through the process with step-by-step guidance, this workshop
is suitable for beginners or experienced embroiderers.

GTC receives £250k grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund
GTC is embarking on a new 18 month project, Cherish
the Past, Create for the Future, which has been made possible with The National
Lottery Heritage Fund.
Thanks
to National Lottery players, we have been able to secure funding which will:
- Lay the foundations for improving both physical and virtual access to the collection.

- Lay the foundations for improving both
physical and virtual access to the collection.
- Undertake a programme of outreach across the East
Lancashire area to better understand and engage local audiences.
- Recruit additional volunteers to work with the
collection.
- Work with community artists to embed creative
practice in the community.
- Modernise the textile displays at Gawthorpe Hall
to introduce new perspectives and stories and to bring them to life with audio
and film.
- Undertake a comprehensive review and digitisation
of the Collection.
"Cherish the Past, Adorn the Present, Create for the Future" was a maxim that Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth developed from the teachings of architect and designer William Lethaby. The ethos of using heritage to create for the future is something that we still hold dear at GTC, using our fabulous collection as a means of creating opportunities to learn and to inspire creativity. Our vision remains to develop a centre of excellence for textile learning based around the collection and this project will be a significant step in building towards that.

National Trust
Nik, the National Trust Ranger took us to the Community walled garden
where volunteers are busy growing both produce and flowers. During the summer on a Wednesday afternoon
there has been a table where visitors can buy produce from the garden. There is an honesty box and all the proceeds
will go towards buying seeds and plants for next year. On our visit we saw the new gates, visited
the yurt, met the volunteers and saw all the produce being grown. Well done to everyone for all the hard
work.

Discover the lives of some of the women of the Kay-Shuttleworth family, and the impact they had regionally and nationally. Exhibition spread through the historic rooms of the Hall.

Dr Twigs Way’s talk will take you on a voyage of discovery into the life and work of Marianne North, most famous for her Victorian botanical paintings now hanging in the North Gallery at Kew. However one of her paintings hangs in the Hall because she was related to the family, come and find out more about this fascinating woman
