The committee try hard to make a varied programme for members
during the year and we hope there will be something of interest to everyone. All the monies we raise go towards the Textiles
Collection, the Hall and the grounds.
This year we purchased special blinds for the Huntroyde Room. This is where the Crewelwork bedspread made
by Miss Rachel is on display. It had
been suffering because of light damage received over the years it had been on
display. A donor paid for the
restoration of the bedspread and this year the Friends paid for special blinds
that will keep out the damaging rays.
The blinds cost £2820 we had a donation from Padiham Council for £200
towards the cost.
Thank you and best wishes from
the Friends Committee
Gawthorpe Textiles News
The 2018 season has been another busy
year for GTC and whilst we still have some study visits to come, so far we have
engaged around 1900 people with the Collection through workshops and activities
(not including Valley Street sessions). As
well as our annual exhibition programme at Gawthorpe, we’ve also had two
external exhibitions – the Hidden Gems collaboration with the University of
Central Lancashire which was displayed at Burnley Mechanics and an exhibition
of work from Valley Street at Burnley Library.
Our
event at Bury Parish Church on 2nd & 3rd November regarding the wedding
dress and waistcoat of Sarah Fletcher and James Kenyon who married at the
Church in 1844 went very well. Our thanks to members of the Friends who
supported the event by coming along. The event was incredibly positive and we
intend to programme a talk about the research at Gawthorpe in April 2019 for
those who were unable to attend Bury.
We have been successful in securing a grant
from the Arts Council for our second exhibition of 2019 – Strands of Place and
Time. This project will work with staff from Manchester School of Art, Action
Factory (Arts organisation in Blackburn) and refugees to create work relating
to the world textiles in the Collection. The National Trust have agreed to
display one artists work in the Great Barn (providing a solution can be found
for the bat droppings!). This will link in with the British Textile Biennial in
October (previously known as Fabrications).
2019 is the 60th anniversary of the
establishment of the RBKS Collections Trust. We are therefore in the process of
developing ideas for activities and events to mark the occasion. Any ideas or
suggestions from the Friends would be welcome.
Thank you all for your support over
the 2018 season. GTC staff and Trustees are all incredibly appreciative of the
work that you do to promote, support and fundraise for the Collection and Hall
and we wish you all the very best for the forthcoming festive season.
Charlotte Steels, Director.

Brothers In Arms
Saturday 10th November
About 800 people attended and the whole evening
went really well, pupils from Shuttleworth College did their performances,
Father Charlie from All Saints Church was also involved. The barn was open and the Brothers in Arms -
Padiham part of the exhibition was in there, with additional artwork from the
students. That part of the exhibition is now in Padiham library until mid
December, if anyone did not get the chance to see it, or wishes to see it
again.
There is no charge.

2019 Displays
All the cabinets will be cleared during the winter
and the new displays will showcase Miss Rachel and the people who have given
the objects to the Collection. The
Textiles collection has had a grant from the Esmee Fairburn Collections Fund to
research the pieces collected by Miss Rachel.
Here are some very special items from the
collection and will explain about the people who made, wore or donated them as
well as the founder of the collection; Miss Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth. The items
will cover a range of textile techniques, periods and countries, including a
priceless Indian shawl, a bonnet fit for a Queen and exquisite lace pieces.
The talk cancelled in October will be held at the beginning of the
2019 season and will be very relevant to the new displays in the textile
galleries.

Portraits
In
2017 the National Trust were offered a gift of five 18th century
portraits to be displayed at Gawthorpe Hall. The paintings are all
members of the Nowell family; local minor gentry connected to the neighbouring
village of Read. The Shuttleworths moved out of Gawthorpe Hall in the
1690s, they retained ownership of the building but chose not to live here,
preferring to live at Fawcett Hall in Yorkshire instead (their other main home
in the north). Alexander Nowell (c.1682-1747) took the tenancy of Gawthorpe
Hall during the 1700s where he died in 1747. His son Ralph Nowell (1721-80)
took over the tenancy and eight of his ten children were born at Gawthorpe
Hall. The sitters in these portraits are three of the sons of Ralph
Nowell and their great uncle Roger Nowell, with his 2nd wife
Rebecca (who both lived at Read Hall).
This is a fabulous group of paintings and they are
on display in the Dressing Room on the top floor, next to the Huntroyde
bedroom. One of the portraits is of Thomas Michael Nowell (1760–1807), born at
Gawthorpe in the 1860s he became a doctor and practised in France mainly in
Boulogne; he worked extensively on the study of vaccinations and was
influential in the development of the small pox vaccine. Another one is
Alexander Nowell (1761-1842) also born at Gawthorpe, he is wearing the uniform
of the East India Company. When he returned to England he bought the Underley
Estate, Westmorland with his fortunes, building a gothic mansion and racing
stables in 1808, he eventually became MP for Westmorland in 1831-2.

Valuable Friends
Friends of Gawthorpe are members of BAFM
(British Association of Friends of Museums).
At the beginning of the year when subs were due we always have to fill
in a form with our details but this last time we were asked more questions –
How many members were volunteers? How
many voluntary hours did they work? How
much did we give to the Museum? What did
we donate to – Acquisitions; Exhibitions; Museum refurbishment;
Learning/education; Events; Marketing, or other?
Until now no one has attempted to
quantify the impact of Friends’ contributions.
The acting Chairman, Alex Walker, thinks BAFM should let the authorities
know what a wonderful job we are all doing.
From our renewal forms this year she
learnt 135 groups reported they had made financial donations to their
museums. From £30 to an impressive
£400,000 – with most being in the £1,000 to £5,000 range. In total members groups reported giving
£2,742,724. That is from the groups who bothered to fill in this section of the
form!
Just over 217,000 hours of
volunteering. Although this may be
unpaid it still has a value. The
Heritage Lottery Fund values voluntary work at a minimum of £50 per day. This makes the value of Friends voluntary
work at well over £1.5M.
This valuable contribution by Friends
can be of use in unlocking grants for their museum. Most fundraisers require a percentage match
towards an award, so all the volunteer hours can sometimes be used as a
contribution. They can also help the
museums application stronger by showing they have the support of the local community.
From the information given by us, BAFM
would like to be an advocate for Friends and for the museums sector. This coming year they will be asking the same
questions and maybe more information.
I did not know how many of our members
were volunteers so only gave the number I knew about. I have since learnt of others. At the end of the season if you were a
volunteer please let me know and roughly the amount of hours. We have got to make the authorities aware of
just what a valuable resource we are.
Do you know where this is in the grounds of
Gawthorpe?

Carol uses contemporary lace as a medium for

the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham. Carol's post-doctoral research
studies the history, manufacture and design of net curtains and lace panels.
Her current practice is based on veiling, inspired by nineteenth-century gothic
fiction.

We (LCC Museum Service) have been successful in our
bid for money from the Heritage Lottery Fund and have £10,000 to support the
Brothers in Arms exhibition. This is really exciting and the exhibition
can now grow into a much bigger project which will include –
· Brothers in Arms main exhibition (30
June to 4th Nov) about
the military history of the Kay-Shuttleworth Family
· Research into local community
involvement in World War 1 – workshops, outreach etc to collect stories and
information about estate workers & servants, local people from Padiham who
also fought/those who stayed at home, some of this will be added in to the main
exhibition from Sept 2018. Rachel Pilling will be leading on this part of the
project, and if you have or know anyone with stories from the World War 1
period please get in touch.
· Work with Shuttleworth College around
World War 1 and pupil’s family histories and 3 days of school
workshops/sessions around remembrance in early November.
· Associated events during the year
including Padiham on Parade (30 June & 1 July), Battle of Britain Day (15
Sept), at least 1 free opening of the Hall to local people.
· A final commemorative event on Sat 10
Nov which will include an illumination of the Hall, working with the secondary
pupils and other groups to get them involved in this too.
We will
keep FOG members informed about what is happening as the project goes on,
particularly the illumination event in November.
LCC are short of volunteers to help
steward the Hall. If
you are more interested in gardening, then volunteers who would be willing to
help with the gardens in the immediate vicinity of the Hall would be very
welcome.

Soft Toys
A member made
some lovely Easter bunnies for sale in the Hall. A visitor bought one then complained because
it had not got a CE label attached. The rabbits had to be withdrawn from
sale. Making soft toys for sale is now a
minefield of rules and regulations therefore it will save everyone much
heartache if you do not make cute little soft toys unless you know and can
comply with all the regulations. I believe
it costs £30 for the booklet of rules.

Members who attended the AGM will have noticed a discrepancy between the visitor figures given by Jo Hudson (NT) and those of Rachel Pollitt (LCC). Rachel explains why there is a difference.
“I have all of the visitor figures which I provided to the National Trust (because the local National Trust get a percentage of income back from their central office for the number of NT visitors who come to the site). However in their totals the National Trust do not include visitors who come to events or on school visits, and this created the discrepancy. Jo Hudson said there were over 24,000 visitors and I put the figure 28,870, the difference is approx. 2,110 at events (theatre, family trails in grounds, talks etc) and approx. 1,500 school children and teachers (up to and including Victorian Xmas week in December, that total does not include the 500 children who were here for Shakespeare week in March).”
As you will have read, this newsletter is all about some of the events that are happening this year in the Hall, with more to come. LCC has put up the prices for entry to the Hall, this makes it even more advantageous to being a member of the Friends - getting free admission.
Best wishes Dianne
