Our 50th anniversary celebration - Tuesday 16 May, 2:00 pm at Gawthorpe Hall.
This was a special occasion when we gathered FOG members together and remembered the past 50 years of events, fundraising and activities which have all contributed to the three charities we help support: Gawthorpe Hall (LCC), the National Trust and Gawthorpe Textiles Collection.
At this very special event the invited guests included Lord and Lady Shuttleworth, the incoming Mayor & Mayoress of Burnley, Mayor of Padiham and the Mayor and Mayoress of Rossendale as well as representatives of the three charities.
An actress played the part of Rachel Kay Shuttleworth gave a talk about her time living at Gawthorpe Hall
Dorothy Jones, Treasurer, spoke about the early days of the Friends
Rachel Pollitt de Duran, Gawthorpe museum manager, presented the Chairman, Carol Stinton, with an album of early photographs of the Friends events, watched by Dorothy Jones.

Wednesday 1st February
On Wednesday 1st February Lord Shuttleworth
planted an oak tree in front of the Hall, on behalf of Lancashire County
Council, to commemorate the life of Queen Elizabeth II. He make a short speech saying how honoured he
was to be invited to his former home to plant the tree in remembrance of the
Queen. He spoke of the times they met and how happy she was to remember these
occasions.

After the main meeting Rachel
Pollitt de Duran will give a short talk about the research that has been
undertaken about Gawthorpe Hall, including the Shuttleworth Accounts (1581 –
1621) kept at the Lancashire Archive in Preston. The
Archives and Gawthorpe Hall (LCC Museum Service) had successfully applied for
grant funding to conserve the archives and a contribution from the Friends
was additional to that. Refreshments Raffle Note: Work is being undertaken in Padiham Town Hall, so parking is very limited – disabled parking only. Members can park in the car park at Tesco or Boyes across the road. Subscriptions are due for the coming year and can be renewed at the meeting - still £10 per year Tickets for the 50th Anniversary Event (see below) will
also be on sale at a cost of £3

Staffing changes at GTC
Rachel Terry former curator of the collection
joined the team in December as project funded collections officer on our new
major Heritage Fund project to review and prepare the collection for relocation
and is now hard at work
Linda Drury has just joined the team as the
new director. She was a Trustee of the
Collection, but has now resigned from
there to take up her new post. She has
extensive experience of working with national charities at a senior level.
Linda has happy memories of Gawthorpe Hall having studied for her City and
Guild here years ago.

Tree Planting
On Wednesday 1st February Lord Shuttleworth
planted an oak tree in front of the Hall, on behalf of Lancashire County

occasions. To plant the tree, Lord
Shuttleworth used the spade previously used by Queen Mary when she did a
similar planting on a visit to Gawthorpe in 1911 with King George V.

Victorian
Christmas We will have hand made crafts
for sale made by our members. There will be a raffle for a quilt made by members
Frances and Kathleen There will also be a dressed doll raffle. The doll is donated by Gail. The raffles will be held over
the two weekends. The draw will be
held on the close of day on 11th December. Thank you so much for the many
hours spent making the quilt and the dolls clothes. |

Staffing changes at GTC
Charlotte Steels, part time Director of GTC for the
past 6 years is leaving to take up a fulltime post with Burnley Leisure and
Culture. She is going to join the board of Trustees for the collection and has
become a member of FoG, so looks forward to continuing to support the work of
both organisations. Charlotte would like to thank all of FoGs members for the
ongoing support that they provide for the collection.

Two further new trustees have been
recruited to our Board – Fiona Ritchie who runs her own marketing and PR
company and Linda Drury who has extensive experience of working with national

Grants and Projects
We have begun rolling out our new Heritage Fund project Cherish the Past,
Create for the Future to redisplay, review, digitise and develop the
collection. Also to work with community artists to deliver programmes of public
activity across the area. We were awarded £250k to undertake this work which
will enable us to make significant improvements to both the public face and
behind the scenes activity of the charity.
We were also successful in being awarded £127k from
the Key Fund / Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund to facilitate the relocation
of the stored collection to Northlight, a major redevelopment of a former
textile mill complex in Brierfield. This relocation opens up significant
opportunities for increasing access to the collection all year round and
developing new partnerships and commercial ventures to support the ongoing care
of the collection.

National Trust
The Stockbrige Drive Gate House is being restored. The National Trust are having a feasibility
study done on the Great Barn to find out what work needs to be done. The café may be turned into a second hand
bookshop and a mobile café nearby.
The volunteers
have been working hard in the grounds keeping it all tidy. Their honesty table of produce did well for
its first year. There was quite a range
of produce available.
We are looking forward to see lots of visitors during the
Victorian Christmas event.
