A tour of Lancashire Archives Preston

Friday 29th July at 10.30am

Earlier this year Friends of Gawthorpe contributed £500 towards the conservation of the Shuttleworth Accounts (1581-1621) which are kept at Lancashire Archives Preston.  The Archives and Gawthorpe Hall (LCC Museum Service) had successfully applied for grant funding to conserve the archives and the contribution from the Friends was additional to that.  This is an opportunity to have a tour behind the scenes of the archives and to see the conservation of the Shuttleworth accounts as the conservator works on them.  Places are limited, first come – first served, ring Gawthorpe Hall (01282 771004) to book a free place (if this is over subscribed we will see if the archives can offer another date).

There is limited paid parking available at Lancashire Archives in Preston (Lancashire Archives (Record) Office, Bow Lane, Preston PR1 2RE).  It is not too far from Preston railway station so it may be easier to park either in the railway station multi-storey car park or across the road  in the Fishergate Centre car park.

Preston is a terrible place to drive through at the moment – because of all the road works so quite a number of roads are closed.   If you are near a station I would recommend getting the train to Preston.  Exit the station at the Fishergate exit (it used to be the main entrance).  Turn left down Fishergate Hill.  Turn right at the traffic lights (Bow Lane).  The Lancashire Archives office is just past the Registry Office on the right.

Welcome to our Yurt in the Walled Garden.

In June Kayleigh attended the History Wardrobe.  ‘Silk & Roses’ Talk in the Hall and it really inspired her to create a modern textile art gallery within the Yurt.

She has spoken with Bev about the potential of her group in helping her bring this  vision to life but, she was wondering if I could help spread the word and involve the Friend's via the Newsletter.

This is a call to arms to all textile aficionadas' asking them if they could help us in decorating the Yurt with various garden related designs such as Bunting with floral, insect or garden tool designs. She is especially interested in highlighting example of historical women's garden attire such as aprons.

What a beautiful, colourful display in the wild flower meadow in the Walled Garden.

I hope this inspires a colourful display inside the Yurt.

Exspiravit      23 July – 6 November

By Decorum

An exhibition by five female artists which brings together a wealth of experience and captures the essence of Gawthorpe Hall.  Exspiravit depicts the historical narrative view of this beautiful Elizabethan Hall, looking at who lived in the house and what it was like hundreds of years ago.  The artists have also been inspired by the wonderful collections on display.

Priscilla Edwards, Christine Stanford, Diana Morrison, Yvonne Noworyta and Val Jackson developed Decorum as a group in 2018 and the artists are all Alumni of the BA and MA Textile and Embroidery Programmes from Manchester University.  With extensive experience and knowledge as artists and teachers, they have all exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally.  This intriguing exhibition takes place in one of the beautiful ornate rooms in Gawthorpe Hall.

Facebook:  @Decorumtextileartists

Meet the artists, Saturday 23rd July      2 – 4pm at Gawthorpe Hall.

A programme of workshops linked to this exhibition is available on our Evenbrite listings

Re: Fashion Repair Shop at Finsley Gate Wharf

On selected dates over the summer months we are running a series of open sessions and workshops to help people to learn the skills to give their old clothes a new lease of life.

You can also bring along any clothes that need mending and we’ll see what we can do. Leave them with us to repair and renew and come back and collect them next time we are open. You can also donate clothing that you no longer want that we can upcycle, repair, and resell. Come and see us at Finsley Gate Wharf in Burnley on one of the following dates:

Saturday 30th July Repurpose and Recycle Day 11am – 3pm
Workshop: 11am - 1pm - Learn basic sewing skills to mend your clothes

Sunday 28th August 11am – 3pm
Workshop: 11am to 1pm - Make a decorative patch to cover a hole or stain

Sign up for your free workshop place by contacting Bev Lamey - b.lamey@gawthorpetextiles.org.uk

The Re: Fashion Repair Shop is being run by Gawthorpe Textiles Collection in association with the Canal & River Trust and is part of the Ethical Textiles project funded by the National Lottery Reaching Communities Fund.

Support Us

Gawthorpe Textiles Collection is going to be undergoing some major changes. In 2021 we updated our vision for the future of the Textiles Collection and our goal is to create a centre of excellence in textile learning. We are currently developing partnerships with educational institutions and other stakeholders towards achieving this. However, we also need to do some groundwork to make the Collection more accessible and easier for people to use.

Due to a shortage of space and worsening environmental conditions in the Collection stores in the Hall basement, we are no longer able to continue to keep the Collections stored there in the long term. As such we are currently looking for a new premises to relocate the stores to. This move creates a fantastic opportunity for us to undertake work with the collection to improve how it is stored, to photograph each item and improve cataloguing. The current stores are full and relocating will mean that we can also begin adding to the collection again, as well as have more space to make the collection accessible to researchers, academics and the general public.

In addition we also intend to redisplay the Collection galleries in the Hall. This will include purchasing new display cases to improve the way that the textiles can be shown, to tell new stories and to introduce recordings that we have of Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth speaking about her collection, bringing both Rachel and the Collection to life for visitors.

All of this activity is going to cost in the region of £300,000 and in the coming weeks we will be launching a major fundraising campaign. We are incredibly grateful for the support that we already receive from the Friends of Gawthorpe, however if you are interested in finding out more about other ways that you can support us, please visit our website: https://www.gawthorpetextiles.org.uk/support-us
